Does each notebook in the JupyterLab IDE feature get their own kernel?

I'm using the JupyterLab IDE feature where I can open multiple notebooks in the JupyterLab interface and am wondering if each notebook is assigned a separate kernel or do all the notebooks share a kernel.

  Each notebook instance will get a separate kernel. Even if a notebook gets opened multiple times each will get a separate kernel.
